A Personal Reflection on Life After a Late Autism Diagnosis
When I received my autism diagnosis, I expected answers.
I didn’t expect the grief, or for old memories to suddenly make sense. I didn’t expect some relationships to change, or to start questioning rules I’d followed for decades, or to realize how exhausted I had been for most of my life.
And I definitely didn’t expect that doing less would help me function better than trying harder ever had.

What This Is
I had been a therapist for decades by then, and I still didn't see most of this coming.
This isn't a clinical textbook or a list of autism traits. It's closer to sitting down with someone who may be a little farther down the road and hearing them say, "Here are some of the things I wish someone had told me."
Each reflection looks at one realization that came after my diagnosis and how it changed the way I understood myself, my relationships, my nervous system, and my life.

Some of the Things I Share
Grief Arrived Alongside Relief
I thought understanding myself would feel simple. Relief did come, but grief came with it.
Old Memories Started Making Sense
Experiences I hadn't thought about in years suddenly looked different once I understood them through the lens of autism.
I Lost Some Relationships
The psychologist who tested me warned me this might happen. At the time, I didn't understand why. Later, I did.
Doing Less Improved My Life
Cutting back on obligations, errands, social expectations, and unnecessary demands helped me function better than pushing harder ever did.
Receiving A Late Autism Diagnosis
It did not change who I was.
It changed what I understood.
The person I am today is the same person I was before the diagnosis.
The difference is that I can finally see myself more clearly.
If you are somewhere in that process too, I hope these twenty-five reflections help you feel a little less alone as you navigate it.

You Might Relate To This If...
-
you were diagnosed as an adult and your whole life suddenly looks different
-
you're grieving, even though the diagnosis brought relief
-
you're questioning old expectations, old relationships, and old beliefs about yourself
-
you've become more aware of your energy and your sensory needs
-
you're starting to see that life may work better when you stop forcing yourself to live the way everyone else seems to
What I Hope You Take Away
Many of the changes that come after a diagnosis aren't signs that something is wrong.
You don't have to figure everything out at once. Often, your understanding is finally catching up to what you've been living with for years.
