Grocery Delivery
& Home Tasks

A trip to the grocery store can take more out of you than the errand is worth. The lighting, the noise, the crowds, and all the small decisions add up, and a lot of late-diagnosed adults have spent years wondering why a simple errand left them wiped out for the rest of the day.

Everything here is something I use myself or have recommended to autistic adults who told me it helped. These services bring groceries and household basics to your door, so you can save your energy for the parts of your day that matter more to you. Take what fits your life and leave the rest.

Amazon Now brings groceries and everyday essentials to your door in about 30 minutes. It’s for the moments when you realize you’re out of something you need today and the thought of going to a store feels like too much. It carries thousands of items, including produce, dairy, household basics, personal care, and pet supplies. It’s still expanding to new cities, so check your Amazon app or account to see whether it’s available where you live. Unlike Amazon Fresh, which works best for a full grocery order planned ahead, Amazon Now is for quick, smaller needs.

I’ll admit I’m a bit of a Walmart loyalist, mostly because I can get so much of what I need in one place. With a Walmart+ membership, you don’t pay delivery fees on orders of $35 or more. If you order groceries four or five times a month like I do, saving around $9 each time adds up quickly compared to the annual fee. Members also get free shipping with no minimum on most items, free pharmacy delivery, and free returns picked up from home. When you do go into the store, Scan & Go lets you check out on your phone and skip the checkout lines.

I use Instacart when I need a couple of items fast. When I needed supplies to maintain my HVAC system, I ordered through Instacart and had them delivered from Home Depot. It works with a wide range of stores beyond groceries, so one app can cover a lot of different errands. You can chat with your shopper while they’re in the store and approve any substitutions, which means fewer surprises when the order arrives.

Walmart+ is my go-to, but I’ve used Amazon Fresh a few times, and the produce has always been extremely fresh and beautiful. Amazon Fresh is made for a full grocery order you plan ahead, with delivery windows you choose. Prime members get free delivery once an order reaches a set amount, and smaller orders carry a fee. Check your area and the current minimum in your Amazon account before you build your first cart.

SHIPT

🚚

Shipt works with specific stores, so if there’s a store you love and it’s on Shipt, a shopper can pick up your items and bring them straight to your home. That means you can keep buying from the places and brands you already trust without walking the aisles yourself. A Shipt membership gives you unlimited deliveries from the stores in your area. You can keep in touch with your shopper through the app while they shop.

I often suggest TaskRabbit for the tasks around the house that seem simple but somehow never get done. You choose a task, compare local Taskers by their rates and reviews, and book a time that works for you. Every Tasker passes an identity and criminal background check. Several autistic adults have told me they use TaskRabbit for groceries, because the Tasker will do the shopping and then come in and put everything away. That last step is often the hardest part after a long day.

You don’t always have to do everything on your own. Thumbtack is a good way to find help with everyday jobs around the house, from cleaning and moving to repairs and yard work. You search for the service you need, and it shows local pros with their prices, reviews, and photos of past work. You can message a few of them before deciding, so you don’t have to start with a phone call.
